A couple in Australia have shown off ‘The Recycled House’, their new home which celebrates vintage finds and upcycles them.

Carla and Ben Karsakis, who are both designers, demolished the residential block they bought to make way for a new house, built from the bottom up with recycled products.

The couple have kept the recycled brick exposed in many of the rooms, providing warmth and a neutral backdrop.

The bare brick works perfectly with the open plan space, which has been designed to be reminiscent of a warehouse.

Other materials, such as timber, have been sourced from the original buildings on the site, which is a lovely way to recognise the site’s history.

Encaustic tiles from Spain were ordered for the floors and reclaimed off-white tiles were used for the walls in order to draw attention to the high ceilings, providing another dimension of texture to the scheme.

This neutral backdrop, which has plenty of interest of its own, was ideal to showcase the couple’s vintage finds, including antique cabinets, industrial lighting and a stunning chair for the bedroom.

Touches of blues and greens are streaked throughout the house, balancing the warm brick with some pastel coolness - exemplified by the abstract peacock feature wall (pictured).
